"Passing It On: The Art of John T. Scott"
Passing It On: The Art of John T. Scott, co-authored by Freddi Williams Evans and John Scott’s widow, Anna Rita Scott, broadens the impact of Scott’s dynamic legacy. Produced by The Helis Foundation John Scott Center, an initiative of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, Passing It On is a vibrant, 100+ page hardcover volume showcasing Scott’s cutting-edge artwork and celebrated career. Renowned as a sculptor, painter, printmaker and artistic visionary, Scott captured the essence of New Orleans and Afro-Caribbean culture in his work, and his public art can still be found throughout the city and the country.
"Collaborating with Anna Rita Scott to write this biography and make it accessible and appealing to general audiences was a labor of love and high honor. John was an incredible human being and a genius of an artist.”
The book offers an intimate look into Scott’s life, featuring stories from his family and friends, profound quotes, and full-color images of his artwork. Each piece is not just a visual feast but also a lesson in history and culture. Accessible to young readers and engaging for adults, this book is a delightful tribute to a true visionary. In addition, the cover art for the book is by Scott’s son, artist Ayo Scott.
“When creating the cover for this book, I was inspired largely by two particular works of my father: the 1984 I've Known Rivers poster and a lesser-known self-portrait. While the poster was public-facing, the portrait was very personal, and I'm excited that this book will allow readers to get to know both sides of such a prolific artist and human being.”
In keeping with Scott’s commitment to knowledge-sharing, the release of the book will be accompanied by robust free distribution to New Orleans-area public libraries, schools and community groups. For those wishing to purchase the book, Passing It On: The Art of John T. Scott will be available for purchase at The Helis Foundation John Scott Center and LEH.org for $45.
“This book is a tribute to Scott's profound impact on the art world and a beacon for exploring his work and philosophy.”
