LEH Receives Funding for Media and Democracy Project

In December LEH received a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support “Media and Message,” a multi-part project examining the ways journalists in Louisiana have responded to periods of political upheaval and change, and the obstacles faced by local outlets today. LEH will partner with WWNO 89.9 FM’s Laine Kaplan-Levenson, LSU professors Alecia Long and Martin Johnson, Jeremy Alford of LaPolitics, and LSU’s Manship School of Communications to produce a series of radio programs and articles in Louisiana Cultural Vistas magazine, as well as a symposium at LSU.

This program is part of the “Democracy and the Informed Citizen” Initiative, administered by the Federation of State Humanities Councils in partnership with the Pulitzer Prizes. The initiative seeks to deepen the public’s knowledge and appreciation of the vital connections between democracy, the humanities, journalism, and an informed citizenry.
