PRIME TIME and the NEH Present A More Perfect Union
On a rainy Saturday in April, teachers, parents and children poured into the Louisiana Humanities Center for a PRIME TIME forum presenting a panel of literacy and public policy advocates. Paulette Irons, New Orleans civil district court judge for Division M, galvanized the audience with her animated speech, followed by Tulane University maritime law professor Robert Force, who brought the American democratic process to life for attendees. The forum was made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ The Common Good: Humanities in the Public Square initiative.
Panelists included Dr. Margaret Mary Sulentic-Dowell, associate professor of Literacy and Urban Education at LSU; Rebecca Hamilton, Louisiana state librarian, and Howard Hunter, academic dean of history at Metairie Park Country Day School. Barry Erwin, president of the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL), moderated. A lively question and answer session centering on education practices in Louisiana followed the presentations. Following the forum, everyone spilled into the lobby for PRIME TIME’s 25th birthday celebration, generously funded by Follett School Solutions, and assisted by volunteers from Target Corporation and Air Liquide, with book sales, refreshments, and helium balloons, also from Air Liquide.
