New Book to Celebrate Life, Legacy of John Scott

A new book scheduled for release on September 12, 2024, will broaden the impact of the dynamic legacy of John T. Scott, the renowned New Orleans artist, teacher, and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow. Passing It On: The Art of John T. Scott is a captivating book co-authored by Freddi Williams Evans and Scott’s widow, Anna Rita Scott, and produced by The Helis Foundation John Scott Center, an initiative of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.

This vibrant, 100-plus page hardcover volume showcases Scott’s cutting-edge artwork and celebrated career. Renowned as a sculptor, painter, printmaker, and artistic visionary, Scott captured the essence of New Orleans and Afro-Caribbean culture in his work, and his public art can still be found throughout the city and the country.

The book offers an intimate look into Scott’s life, featuring stories from his family and friends, profound quotes and full-color images of his artwork. Each piece is not just a visual feast but also a lesson in history and culture. Accessible to young readers and engaging for adults, this book is a delightful tribute to a true visionary. In addition, the cover art was created by Scott’s son and artist, Ayo Scott.

In keeping with Scott’s commitment to knowledge-sharing, the release of the book will be accompanied by robust free distribution to New Orleans-area public libraries, schools and community groups. For those wishing to purchase the book, Passing It On: The Art of John T. Scott, will be available at The Helis Foundation John Scott Center and LEH.org for $45.

The book’s printing and related programming is generously supported by The Helis Foundation, a long-time supporter of John Scott’s work, as well as the National Endowment for the Arts.

A book launch and blessing will be held Thursday, September 12, at The Helis Foundation John Scott Center, 938 Lafayette St. in New Orleans, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission to the event will be free, and the public is invited to attend.
