knowlouisiana.org Debuts

After 26 years of publishing Louisiana Cultural Vistas magazine and nine years of developing our Digital Encyclopedia of Louisiana, the LEH has debuted a new website that merges both print and online initiatives: https://www.knowlouisiana.org/. We invite you to visit this unparalleled collection of stories, entries, photo essays and other media that span the breadth of Louisiana’s art, culture, history, folklife, music, literature and cuisine. Current uploads include the transcripts from a panel discussion on the fate of Confederate memorials in New Orleans and feature stories about labor leader Victor Bussie and the origins of the Superdome. As election season approaches, watch video conversations with former governors Edwin Edwards, Buddy Roemer, Mike Foster, and Kathleen Blanco.

Discover the origins of New Orleans’ “neutral grounds” and the geographical significance of LSU’s Tiger Stadium. Music and book reviews from Louisiana Cultural Vistas and select stories from past issues reside herein, including essays by renowned authors reflecting on the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Over the course of the next few months, all 1,000 entries and 4,000 related media items from our Encyclopedia of Louisiana will be transferred to the new website, including biographical profiles of all Louisiana governors, major musicians ranging from Louis Armstrong and Mahalia Jackson to Michael Doucet and the heyday of the Louisiana Hayride live-radio show, along with historical overviews of the Louisiana Purchase, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and World Wars I and II. All that makes Louisiana yours to explore from a computer screen or any mobile device.
