Dr. Nancy Dixon, Humanities Hero

Dr. Nancy Dixon, Professor of English at Dillard University, has been studying and writing about New Orleans literature, culture, and history for more than twenty years. Her book, Fortune and Misery: Sallie Rhett Roman of New Orleans, (LSU Press 1999), won the LEH Humanities Book of the Year award in 2000.

Dr. Dixon has been an integral member of the PRIME TIME program for many seasons, and a delightful presence at numerous LEH cultural events around New Orleans and the state. She has published several essays and presented at literary and scholarly conferences in New Orleans and worldwide, and her latest book, N.O. Lit: 200 Years of New Orleans Literature, is the most comprehensive collection on record.

“I have devoted my life to the humanities, exposing students of all ages to the rich world of literature, history, and the arts. You could say my life depends on it. In this time of global uncertainty, we can read to our children, attend a concert, go to a museum, pick up a book, or listen to music in order to enrich our lives. We turn to language, culture, and creativity for inspiration. You could say our lives depend on it,” said Dixon.
