Museum on Main Street Exhibit Opens at Angola
The 2013-14 Museum on Main Street touring exhibit, “The Way We Worked,” concludes this month with a final stop at the Louisiana State Penitentiary Museum in Angola. The tour is partnership between the LEH, the Smithsonian Institute and five sites in Louisiana. The exhibit closes on June 29.
The museum at Angola was reorganized recently to highlight its extraordinary collection of artifacts and photographs from the penitentiary’s unique history. On May 30 the penitentiary hosted a “Farming on the Farm” symposium, featuring a tour for the public and lectures on the agriculture of West Feliciana Parish and the influence of the cotton industry in Louisiana history. Project director Marianne Fisher-Giorlando also organized demonstrations by inmates on the making of Mayhaw jelly.
Adapted from an original exhibition developed by the National Archives, “The Way We Worked” explores how work became such a central element in American culture by tracing the many changes that affected the workforce and work environments over the past 150 years.
