Black History Month Essay Contest with The Helis Foundation John Scott Center
Attention junior high and high school students in the Orleans Parish School System! We invite you to celebrate Black History Month by participating in The Helis Foundation John Scott Center’s inaugural essay contest, centered on the inspiring theme: “Pass It On: Why is it important to be committed to being a positive change agent in your community?”
This theme is rooted in the legacy of John T. Scott, the renowned New Orleans-born artist, educator, and humanist. Scott believed in “passing it on”—sharing knowledge, uplifting others, and ensuring that future generations build on the progress of those who came before. Through his art and teachings, Scott celebrated the African diaspora and emphasized the power of community, creativity, and responsibility. He was committed to fostering positive change and inspiring others to do the same.
Your essay is your chance to reflect on how you can make an impact in your community and continue this powerful legacy.
The first place winner will receive $100, the second place winner will receive $50, and the third place winner will receive exclusive center merchandise. In addition, all winners will be honored during a special virtual event hosted by The Helis Foundation John Scott Center in March.
Don’t miss this opportunity to let your voice be heard and inspire others with your vision for a better future. Let’s “pass it on” together!
Submission Deadline: Sunday, March 16
Eligibility: Open to all junior high and high school students in Orleans Parish.
