Bayou State of Mind

The Helis Foundation John Scott Center is honored to participate in the upcoming exhibition A Bayou State of Mind opening September 4, 2025, at the LSU Museum of Art in Baton Rouge. This powerful exhibition celebrates the diverse cultural, environmental, and emotional landscapes of Louisiana told through the lenses of over 35 visionary artists whose work spans generations, mediums, and regions.

A Bayou State of Mind offers viewers a sensory rich experience that embraces Louisiana’s complexity and beauty. The exhibition includes more than 120 works across photography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, glass, new media, and mixed media, and features both Louisiana natives and artists inspired by their encounters with the state’s unique spirit. The exhibition’s highlight The Bayou Collection by George Rodrigue, including the debut of his now iconic Blue Dog, offers a deep nod to folklore and imagination that runs parallel to the lived experiences captured by other artists in the show.

In addition to Scott’s work, the exhibition features works by Ben Depp, Johanna Warwick, James Michalopoulos, Nathalie Miebach, Vitus Shell, Jesse Allison, Derick Ostrenko, Ron Bechet, Shirley Rabé Masinter, Malaika Favorite, Carl Joe Williams, Eric Waters, Gene Koss, Hunt Slonem, Rolland Golden, Tina Freeman, Carrie Mae Weems, Janice Sachse, Morgan Elmore, Jr., Robert Warrens, Letitia Huckaby, Jonathan Bachman, Richard Misrach, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Dawn DeDeaux, David Freese, Thomas Neff, Michael Frederic Daugherty, Sidney Garrett, Steve Rucker, and Jamey Grimes.
