PRIME TIME Launches Healthy Eating Family Literacy Program

On June 2nd, 2015, PRIME TIME, in partnership with Market Umbrella and through the kind and generous support of BHP Billiton, launched PRIME TIME Plus, a healthy eating family literacy program. The first pilot sites include Clarence C Barney Urban League Head Start in East New Orleans and Rainbow Academy in Gentilly, New Orleans.

Each center has an average of 15 families participating (30 individuals) in the 6 weekly sessions. Participants have the opportunity to enjoy healthy meals, story sharing and discussion all in one session. Each week families take home high quality books, and food and kitchen supplies to make healthy recipes at home, recipe cards, and literacy door prizes.

PRIME TIME Plus introduces young children and their families to literature and nutritional practices through engaging activities that promote family-centered foundational skills in early literacy, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles.

By participating in PRIME TIME Plus, families will:

  • Help their child enjoy reading, sharing ideas, and healthy eating
  • Engage in high quality programming that promotes family bonding and healthy lifestyles
  • Enhance their parent/caretaker skills for facilitating school readiness of their child
  • Plant the seeds for school readiness, healthy living and future academic success

Following New Orleans, PRIME TIME Plus will launch in Caddo and Bossier parishes in October 2015 with programs occurring at the 81st Street ECE and Multicultural Development Center.
